The Power of Hemp – Part I: Chuck Smoking Anxiety Out the Window

Welcome to the first part in our special new series on the power of hemp. We’ll be dedicating an article to each of the benefits that hemp/CBD studies have brought to light in recent years.

Our first piece is all about what hemp can do for anxiety. It’s highly relevant to mention that right now, we’re living in what’s been called the “age of anxiety.”

What does this mean? As far as we can tell, it means 2 things:

  1. Anxiety has always been around, but it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves as a real condition that impacts quality of life.
  2. Anxiety in general has become more common due to the technology and isolation of modern life.

We won’t waste time spouting theories about society’s ills, but we’ll say this much…

The arrival of legal, industrial hemp couldn’t be more timely.

Hemp is the world’s most innovative new smoking alternative – modern studies have uncovered some really exciting early findings. These findings detail a relationship between anxiety and CBD (the active ingredient in hemp rolls). 

There’s still more to research, but what we have paints an incredible picture of just how promising hemp really is for anxiety.

Hemp and CBD are actually promising in a number of ways, but for now, we’re just focusing on the anti-anxiety angle.

Specifically, we want to answer any questions you may have about hemp’s relationship with anti-anxiety effects.

For starters, CBD has been demonstrated to act as potential treatment for almost every anxiety disorder in the book.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

This is basically the clinical term for someone you’d call a “worry wart.” Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a condition that causes excessive worry.

Worry about what? You name it: health, money, work, family, etc. If it can be worried over, GAD will probably cause you to worry about it.

This is one of the disorders that some researchers think can be helped with CBD, which is good because it’s one of the most common.

Social Anxiety Disorder

People with this condition struggle so much with anxiety over interacting with other people that they become dysfunctional. 

If feelings of nervousness about seeing or talking with others become unmanageable, you may be dealing with social anxiety disorder. That being said, having social anxiety doesn’t mean you have a disorder, and you don’t have to have a disorder to struggle with social anxiety.

Lots of people have a difficult time with feelings of dread, overwhelm, and painful self-awareness in the social arena. But if it starts to control your life, there’s no question that CBD holds some promise.

According to study results from 2010, CBD may be able to reduce anxious symptoms of social anxiety disorder, meaning that it can help people with more minor social phobias too. 

In the study, participants had their brains scanned, and it was evident that certain “anxious” centers in the brain were receiving different levels of blood flow. The result? Participants reported significantly decreased levels of anxiety.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

This can be an especially painful condition. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been portrayed in the media as quirky or eccentric. That may be true in some cases, but the reality of OCD is nightmarish for some of its victims. 

People with this condition feel anxious about all kinds of things, even events or thoughts that they know are totally unrealistic. It occurs to them that performing some action will relieve the anxiety or even stop a fearsome event altogether. 

This is why someone with OCD might have to do something like repeating certain phrases many, many times in a row or washing their hands until the skin is rubbed raw.

For sufferers of OCD, hemp may be able to soothe worries, and a reduction in this could mean a reduction in frustrating rituals they don’t have to perform as often.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Potentially the most serious condition listed here, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) used to have a different name: “shell shock.” Many veterans of the armed forces have returned home to discover that their troubles are far from over…

People with this condition suffer a broad range of symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks, trouble maintaining relationships, reckless behavior, and so much more.

Armed conflict is notorious for causing PTSD in even the toughest, most disciplined soldiers, but it’s not limited to vets alone – PTSD can arise from childhood trauma, long-term abuse, or even just one incredibly scary event.

As a potential calming agent, studies report that CBD has the potential to act as a powerful supplement for people with PTSD.

Hemp, Anxiety, and Nicotine Addiction

Unfortunately, struggling with a tobacco habit can make any existing anxiety issues even worse. Nicotine withdrawal can be your worst nightmare, and it can crank nervousness or agitation (of nearly any type) up several notches.

Withdrawal might even cause social anxiety in people who normally don’t experience that kind of fear. Good thing combustible hemp is such an effective alternative to nicotine and tobacco,

With industrial hemp officially legalized and retailers like 1606 at the ready, we’re in a new world of opportunity for people who struggle with anxiety—smokers and non-smokers alike. Can hemp tip the scales for anxious people? Studies suggest it can.
